Batiks are wonderful fabrics that offer lively variation and great colour. Batik is an Indonesian fabric dyeing technique that uses wax resist to create layered designs. Wax is drawn or stamped onto fabric, often between layers of dye, and the fabric is later boiled to remove the wax. Other fabrics that we refer to as batik but do not involved wax (so they are not technically batik) use salt to create lovely variegated texture (the salt shifts and swirls as the dye dries in the sun). Batik fabrics are wonderful for quilting, clothing, and home goods. It's hard to capture their full beauty and variations in photographs. This batik fabric was made in Indonesia by Lunn Studios for Robert Kaufman.

This fabric is sold in half yard increments: one unit equals one half yard. The fabric will be cut in one continuous piece regardless of how many units you order (i.e. if you order 4 units you will receive a single 2 yard piece).

This is a quilting weight 100% cotton fabric and is 44/45" (110 cm) wide.

From Robert Kaufman Fabrics:
"These one-of-a-kind Artisan Batiks are produced on the island of Java in Indonesia by skilled dye masters.

Each yard of these sumptuous fabrics is unique. The fabric is hand-stamped and then hand-painted multiple times, with many different pairs of hands working on every yard. Most of the work is done outside, so the weather greatly influences the results. Due to this specialized hand-process, there is a consistency to color and pattern, while maintaining subtle color variations that are so important to this traditional technique.

Please Note: There are always slight variations from bolt to bolt and color to color that result from the interaction of the hand processes with nature. This is the beauty of batik."
